HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/31/09) – Junior
Anna Baldwin (Woodbury, Conn.) scored her second goal of the season six minutes into the first overtime session to lift the Raiders women’s soccer team past Bucknell 2-1 in Colgate’s final home game of the regular season. With the win, the Raiders clinched the Patriot League regular season title and will host the conference tournament begining Friday, Nov. 6.
Bucknell put the first mark on the board in the just the third minute of the game, as Brooke Stokes played a cross into the near post for an oncoming Kelliann Doherty who placed a shot into the far corner past Ashley Walsh (Cicero, N.Y.), putting the Bison in command early.
The Raiders battled back in the first half evening the score in the 28th minute, after Jillian Arnault (Clay, N.Y.) was left alone in the box and lifted a shot off the crossbar that fell behind Bucknell goalie Kathryn Sutton.
The teams played to a scoreless second half, with Colgate having the slight advantage in shots, 9-7. Walsh was forced to make three saves in the second frame, while Sutton stopped both Raider shots that were directed on goal.
Anna Baldwin's game-winning goal
The overtime period was controlled by the Raiders, as they kept possession for the majority of the opening minutes. Just a few minutes was all Colgate needed, before
Jillian Kinter (Newburyport, Mass.) played a long ball over the top of the Bison midfield to Baldwin. The forward then took on the lone defender, beating her to the outside and skillfully dribbling past Sutton who came out to challenge the play. An open net is all Baldwin saw, before burying her shot to the back of the net, giving the Raiders a thrilling victory on Senior Day.
The win sends the Raiders to the Patriot League tournament for the second consecutive year and 17th time in program history.
“That was a fantastic game”, said head coach Kathy Brawn. “Both teams played really hard and I’m proud of the total team effort that we displayed; not only in the game, but in the practices leading up to it.”
The women will play on Friday, Nov. 6, in the semifinal round of the Patriot League tournament. The time of kick off is yet to be determined.
