LEWISBURG, Pa. (10/5/09) - Senior Elise DeRose (Williamsville, N.Y.) advanced to the semifinals of the Flight A bracket at the Bucknell Invitational, where the Colgate women’s tennis team competed this past weekend, Oct. 2-4.
DeRose went 2-1 in singles, and advanced to the semifinal rounds of both the Flight A singles and doubles brackets. She first defeated UConn’s Alison Campitiello, 6-3, 7-5, before downing host team Bucknell’s Lauren Lucido, 6-1, 6-1. DeRose fell to eventual champ, Elmine Botes of Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-0, 6-4.
In doubles action DeRose and partner Cameron Williams (Winnetka, Ill.) received a bye in the first round of play and defeated Bucknell’s Tania Varela and Carlin Calcaterra, 8-6, to advance to the semifinals. There they lost to Botes and Julia Korsunova of FDU, 8-2. Williams and fellow senior Samantha Inacker (Lake Forest, Ill.) both went 0-2 in singles action, dropping their first matches in the main draw bracket as well as their consolation matches. Williams fell to Bucknell’s Lucido and UConn’s Emily Herb, while Inacker dropped matches to FDU’s Julia Prantl and UConn’s Kelley LoRusso.
In the Flight B draw, Jackie Stimmel (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Stephanie Brown (Mendham, N.J.)) both won their first round but fell in the second while freshman Meredith Rock (Kansas City, Mo.) dropped her first match but won her consolation game. Stimmel downed George Mason’s Meredith Cutchin, 6-3, 6-4 before falling to Bucknell’s Demi Iepuras, 6-1, 6-1. Brown defeated GMU’s Cecelia Greco, 1-6, 6-2 (10-8) before falling to UConn’s Alexa Gregory, 6-3, 6-2. Alexi Aberant (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Liz Cohen (Pittsburgh, Pa.) both lost their first matches in the Flight C draw.
In doubles action, duo’s Inacker and Brown, Stimmel and Bender and Rock and Aberant all dropped their first round matches with Inacker and Brown competing in the Flight A doubles, while the two other pairs saw action in Flight B matches.
