HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/14/09) – Kaleigh Durket (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) posted eight kills and Kaylee Dougherty (Landisville, Pa.) once again hit for a high average as Colgate sent its seniors out with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-15 victory over Navy in their final home appearance at Cotterell Court, Saturday afternoon.
The Raiders, who improved to 15-12 overall and 11-3 in league play, will wait until this evening’s results in the Patriot League to determine who they will play in the opening round of next weekend’s league tournament. Colgate will either play Army or American depending on tonight’s results.
The Raiders used a 4-0 run in the early stages of the opening set to shake loose of the Midshipmen. Senior Kelsea Loveless (Lubbock, Texas) gave the Raiders the lead at 5-4 with an ace. The lead gradually grew throughout the course of the set. Colgate won the opening set on an attack error by Navy.
The second set featured five ties, the last coming at 12-12. Meghan Fanta (Hillsboro, Wisc.) set Logan Keala (Kaneohe, Hawaii) with the go ahead kill to give the Raiders a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Dougherty, who finished with six kills in 10 attacks, gave Colgate set point with her first kill of the afternoon. Once again, the Raiders claimed the set on a Navy error.
The final set was tight until the midway point of the set. Navy held six leads in the game, including a two-point advantage at 6-4. With the set all square at 14-14, Casey Ritt (Colorado Springs, Colo.) provided the go ahead point with her lone kill of the set. The kill triggered a 6-0 run as Colgate took a commanding 20-14 lead. After Navy broke the run with a kill by Meghan Carpenter, the Raiders closed the match out on the serve of Fanta. The senior ended her playing career at Cotterell Court with the final kill of the match.
Colgate and Navy each tallied 28 team digs in the three-game match. Devon Applegate (Davidson, N.C.) finished with a match-high eight. The Raiders’ block totaled eight team blocks against the Mids, with Ritt leading the way with a block solo and three block assists. Fanta dished out 28 assists and moved within 23 of climbing up the all-time Patriot League assist charts.
Navy, which fell to 8-21 overall and 3-11 in league play, was led by Carpenter’s match-high 10 kills.
