CENTER VALLEY, PA. – Colgate’s Sarah Pedersen (State College, Pa.) has been named the 2009 Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar Athlete of the Year, it was announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.

It marks only the second time a field hockey player from Colgate has garnered this particular recognition.  Becky Evans was named the 1997 Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year.

“We are very proud of Sarah and the recognition that she has earned as the scholar athlete of the year,” said Colgate head coach Cathy Foto.  “Her academic priorities have always been her main focus and she has always valued her academic experience and what it will allow her to do in the future. Her selection is a great testament to how hard she has pushed her self to excel in the classroom.”

Pedersen, a three-year starter for the Raiders, finished her career ranked sixth on the all-time win list with 19.  In 2009, she started all 16 games in the cage for Colgate and led the Patriot League regular season with 121 saves.  Her 7.53 saves per game currently ranked 14th nationally.

Academically, Pedersen carries a 3.98 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in biology.  She is a two-time Charles A. Dana Scholar, which recognizes superior academic achievement as well as having demonstrated leadership in the college community.  Pedersen has been named to the Dean’s List as well as the Raider Academic Honor Roll every semester since stepping on campus and is a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and National Field Hockey Honor Roll selection.  She is an active member of the Tri-Beta Society (biology honor society) and was a former member of Phi Eta Sigma Society (freshman honor society).

To be eligible for one of the Patriot League Scholar Athletes of the Year, a student-athlete must have at least sophomore academic status and  possess at least a 3.20 grade point average and be a starter or key substitute in his/her sport.
