Boston College Edges Colgate in Men's Swimming
Casey Powers
Casey Powers had two second place finishes against the Eagles.

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. (11/7/09)  – Dan Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.) was a triple winner, while Costas Hadjipateras (New Canaan, Conn.) and Tucker Gniewek (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) were both double winners, but it wasn’t enough as Colgate fell to Boston College 151-149 in men’s swimming action, Saturday afternoon.

In all, the Raiders, who fell to 0-2 overall, claimed first place finishes in seven events.  In addition, Colgate copped the top two spots in the 100 breast and 50 free and swept the top three in the 100 fly.

“I don’t think I have ever been as proud of the men’s team as I was with this performance,” said Colgate head coach Stephen Jungbluth.  “We swam a flawless meet and won many close battles.  The guys stayed in there against a team that has many more swimmers than we do.  We were lucky to have two in every race, while they could fill their lanes in every race. The guys exceeded what I thought was going to happen in every event except one.”

For the second consecutive week, Sweeney copped the 50 and 100 free races.  The freshman led a one-two finish with Gniewek in the 50 with a winning time of 22.0.  Sweeney came back to touch with a 48.27.

Teddy Perley (Harrison, N.Y.) and Tyler Coolman (Fort Collins, Colo.) finished one-two in the 100 breast.  Perley posted a 1:01.45 to win the event by close to two seconds over Coolman (1:03.60).

Trailing heading into the 100 fly, the Raiders grabbed their first lead of the meet as Gniewek, Robert Rutkowski (Lititz, Pa.), and Hadjipateras finished with a clean one-two-three sweep.  Gniewek posted a winning time of 52.77, while Rutkowski and Hadjipateras swam times of 52.99 and 53.09 respectively.

After the Eagles reclaimed the lead in the three-meter diving and 200 IM, Colgate needed to place first and third to win the meet.  Sweeney, Nick Pawlush (Hummelstown, Pa.), Hadjipateras, and Gniewek did their part by winning with a 3:12.47, but the Eagles’ second team bested Colgate’s to claim the win.

Devon Healy (New Canaan, Conn.) and Hadjipateras posted firsts in the other two events by taking the 1000 free (9:52.21) and 200 free (1:46.47) races respectively.

Colgate received other individual second place efforts from Casey Powers (Chappaqua, N.Y.) in the 200 fly (1:59.34) and 500 free (4:50.39); Dan Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) in the 200 back (2:00.53) and 200 IM (2:00.31), Nick Burkus (Weston, Mass.) in three-meter diving (209.20) and Tyler Makepeace (Wallingford, Conn.) in the one-meter dive (240.60).
