WEST POINT, N.Y. (4/18/09) - The Colgate University men’s tennis team shut out Holy Cross in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The Raiders started off by winning both the second and third doubles to take the doubles point. Phil Bernasek (Fairfield, Conn.) and Ruslan Goussiantnikov (Needham, Mass.) defeated Dan Phelan and Chris Das, 8-2, at the No. 2 spot, while Michael Yassky (New York, N.Y.) and Jamie Pellechi (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) downed Jerome DeSant and A.J. Shakar, 8-1, at third doubles.
In singles action, Yassky defeated DeSanto, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 4 spot, while Goussiantnikov downed Das, 6-2, 6-0 at fifth singles. Freshman Sean Spellberg (Naples, Fla.) beat out Tom Steinart, in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at sixth singles.
The Raiders will face Army on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the Tournament. The Black Knights downed Lafayette, 4-0, in their first round game on Friday.
