WEST POINT, N.Y. (4/20/09) - The Colgate men’s tennis team fell to host school Army, 4-0, on Saturday in the semifinal round of the Patriot League Tournament. The men finished the 2009 season 12-8 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
"This match was closer than it looked, had the match finished it could have been a 4-3 match," commented head coach Bobby Pennington. "This was a special season, the future is bright for Colgate tennis"
In doubles action, Phil Bernasek (Fairfield, Conn.) and Ruslan Goussiantkikov (Needham, Mass.) downed Chris Albornoz and Bruno Lucivero, 8-4, for the Raiders only win, at second doubles. In the No. 1 spot, Martin MacIntyre (Arlington, Va.) and John Nogueras (Parkland, Fla.) were downed 8-4, by Phil Muhawi and Jordan Girdley, while Michael Yassky (New York, N.Y.) and Jamie Pellechi (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) lost the third doubles match, 8-3, to Sean Harris and Donald Van Velzer.
Only three of the singles matches were finished, with Army taking all three for the win. At third singles, Bernasek fell to Girdley, 6-2, 6-1 while Goussiantnikov dropped the fifth singles match, 6-1, 6-0, to Van Velzer. Rounding out the singles play was Sean Spellberg (Naples, Fla.), who fell to Bruno Lucivero, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 6 spot.
