Tennis Advances to Semifinals of Patriot League Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. (4/24/09) -   The Colgate women’s tennis team shut out Holy Cross, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Championship early Friday afternoon.  The Raiders advance to the semifinal round where they will face No. 1 seeded Army on Saturday at 10 a.m.

 

The Raiders started off match play with wins at both first and third doubles to win the doubles point.  Juniors Elise DeRose (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Cameron Williams (Winnetka, Ill.) downed Holy Cross’ Kristen Meahl and Carolyn Chandley, 8-2, at first doubles.  Third doubles duo of Alexandra Erickson (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Cameron Thaney (Rochester, N.Y.) defeated Emma Rudnik and Kathryn Wilke, 8-2, for the win.

 

In singles action, DeRose beat out Meahl, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 1 spot, while senior Erin Fenn (Evanston, Ill.) defeated Carolyn Chandley, 6-2, 6-3, at third singles.  Williams sealed the victory for the Raiders with a 6-2, 6-2, win against Hailee Lange at fourth singles. 

 

"Our girls looked very sharp and played a very impressive, clean match.  We showed who the real #4 seed was today,” stated head coach Bobby Pennington.  “We are looking forward to the challenge of Army tomorrow."
