HAMILTON, N.Y. (5/14/09)—The Colgate University women’s track and field team will close out the 2009 season this weekend at the 26th annual ECAC Women’s Track and Field Championship at Princeton. The meet kicks off at 1 p.m., on May 15 at William Weaver Track and Field Stadium.
The quartet of senior Ashley Mecone (Hopkinton, Mass.), sophomore Michele Miller (Silver Spring, Md.), junior Ashley Niness (Berwyn, Pa.), and senior Curry Knox (Seattle, Wash.), will compete in the 4x100-meter trials at 2:45 p.m., on May 16. The top eight teams advance to the finals on May 17 at 12 p.m.
Colgate earned a spot in the championship meet with a season-best performance at the Patriot League Championship. The squad of finished with an ECAC qualifying time of 47.14, while smashing the school record. The time was nearly one second faster than the previous record of 48.00 they set earlier this season.
Knox the 2009 Patriot League Female Track Athlete of the Year will also compete in three individual events after a record-setting performance on the final day of competition at the Patriot League Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Army.
Knox kicked off the day with a first-place showing in the 100-meter dash. She clocked in an NCAA regional qualifying time of 11.70. Her time was also a school record and .20 of a second faster than the Patriot League record of 11.90 set by Ebony Thomas of Army last season.
Knox then followed with a first-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. She covered the 100-meter stretch of the track in a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 14.31. Her time was .22 faster than her previous school record of 14.53.
Knox then finished her day with a school-record setting performance in the 200-meter dash. Knox finished second in the event with an ECAC qualifying time of 24.69.
As for distance events sophomore Julie Tarallo (Easton, Mass) the Patriot League 10,000-meter run champion will compete at 8:00 p.m. on the first day. Tarallo is coming off a record-setting performance at the Patriot League Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Tarallo, ran the 6.2 miles in a personal-record time of 36:55.25. Tarallo’s personal-best performance is an ECAC qualifying time and the second fastest time in school history. She is only the second Colgate runner to break the 37 minute mark.
