Bubnack and Kearns Gain All-Region Accolades

HAMILTON, N.Y. (5/29/09) - Colgate women’s lacrosse placed two of its 2009 team members on an all-region squad, as the IWLCA announced its end of season awards, Thursday.

Senior Maddie Kearns (Chevy Chase, Md.) and sophomore Colleen Bubnack (Syracuse, N.Y.) each were named second team all-Northeast Region honorees.  The tandem becomes the first Raiders to garner such an honor since 2005 when Katie McVeigh gained second team recognition.

Kearns, the 2009 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, started all 19 games for the league champion Raiders and posted 20 points on 14 goals and six assists.  The graduated senior, who was used primarily as a defensive midfielder, completed her career with 40 goals and 17 assists in 74 games.  She ranks seventh on the all-time draw control list at Colgate with 81. Kearns, also a Patriot League all-tournament team honoree, was named the league’s defensive player of the week once on March 31 for her efforts against Binghamton and Navy.  Those performances also got noticed nationally as she was named the national defensive player of the week by womenslacrosse.com.

Bubnack, a first team all-league performer, completed her 19-game schedule with 62 points on 34 goals and 28 assists.  The rising junior finished one assist and one draw control (49) away from tying the single-season records in those categories.  Bubnack’s team-best 61 ground balls ranks 10th on the single season list.  She tallied five goals, two assists, 10 ground balls, and caused eight turnovers in two games en route to being selected the Patriot League Tournament MVP.  She finished the season ranked fourth nationally in caused turnovers per game (2.32) and seventh in ground balls per game (3.21).

In addition to Kearns’ and Bubnack’s honors, graduated senior Molly Carroll (Swarthmore, Pa.) was selected to participate in the North-South Senior All-Star Game, which will be played the weekend of June 13th in her home state of Pennsylvania.  Carroll will become the eighth Raider to play in the event.  She started 14 of 15 games this season and compiled 18 points on 15 goals and three assists.  Carroll, who was named to the 2009 Patriot League all-tournament team, completed her career with 163 groundballs, which ranks eighth on the all-time list.

Colgate, which finished the season with its second consecutive Patriot League title, amassed an overall record of 14-5.  The Raiders are expected to return 18 letterwinners for the 2010 season, including their top four scorers.
