BETHLEHEM, PA (5/8/09) – Lafayette College rallied from five runs down to eliminate Colgate from the 2009 Patriot League double-elimination softball tournament, 8-5, Friday afternoon at Lehigh University’s Kaufman Field.
Colgate (25-18) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, when leadoff hitter Jennifer Ortega (Aberdeen, NJ) scored on a double by Erin Gomez (Lawrenceville, NJ). In the second inning, the Raiders upped their advantage to 5-0. Ortega and Calla Yee (Salinas, CA) drove in the first two runs with RBI singles, and Gomez came through with a two-run double.
Lafayette started its comeback with four runs in the third inning off Colgate starter Lacy Ver Steeg (Elk Grove, CA). The Leopards followed with two runs in the fourth inning for a 6-5 lead. Lafayette added two more runs in the sixth inning.
Colgate pounded out 13 hits in the game but left five runners in scoring position. Ortega, Yee, Gomez, Meg Mylan (Upper Montclair, NJ) and Melissa Babb-Renta (Glenview, IL) had two hits apiece for the Raiders.
