Raiders Fall to No. 10 Rollins, 8-1

ORLANDO, Fla. (3/19/10) - The Colgate men’s tennis team suffered an 8-1 loss to No. 10 Rollins on Thursday, March 18, its final day of play in Orlando, Fla. The Raiders are now 5-5 overall while the tenth-ranked Tars improve to 8-6 on the season.
 
The Raiders lone singles win came at the No. 4 position as rookie Alec Goldstein (Bethesda, Md.) outlasted Girts Dzelde, 2-6, 6-2 (15-13). Seniors Michael Yassky (New York, N.Y.) and Phil Bernasek (Fairfield, Conn.) nearly upset Rollins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively, each splitting their first two sets but they were unable to hold on for the win. Yassky fell to the Tars’ Jeff Morris 7-6, 5-7, (10-3), while Bernasek fell to Neil Clausen, 5-7, 6-3, (10-2).
 
In doubles action, Rollins’ Morris and Clausen defeated Bernasek and Ruslan Goussiantnikov (Needham, Mass.) in the No. 1 spot, 8-6. Senior co-captains John Nogueras (Parkland, Fla.) and Yassky fell to Pable Seijo and Nick Rowlands, 8-6, at second doubles. Freshmen John Beam (Kenilworth, Ill.) and Parker Lewis (Littleton, Colo.) dropped their third doubles match, 8-3, to Dzelde and Arturo Baravalle.
 
The Raiders will be back in action Saturday, March 27 when they return to their Patriot League slate, taking on Army at 9 a.m. in West Point, N.Y.
